Beauty is Only a Name Away

Early Beauty Advertising

 Women at the beginning of the twentieth century wanted long hair.  They could buy potions that promised to make it grow, or one purchase long hair from a magazine.

Charles Dona Gibson creates the century's first pin-up girl with his drawings published in Life magazine.  The Gibson Girl represented the ideal "liberated young woman" and sported long locks swept up into a pompadour.  This hair was rolled from temple to temple over a horsehair "rat" to give it width.

Man longed to find a real life counterpart of the Gibson Girl who enjoyed the new freedoms of outdoor sport and indoor flirtation.

 About 1910, a campaign was begun to stop the practice of women wearing "rats" or false puffs of hair.  Public outcry claimed that with the use of such "preps", women were living a fiction that would pervade other areas of their lives
